This test is commonly recommended for individuals suspected of having had a previous Parvovirus B19 infection or to evaluate immunity. In pregnant women, the test can be used to assess whether the fetus is at risk, particularly if the mother has been exposed to someone with fifth disease. It may also be ordered in cases of unexplained anemia or suspected viral involvement in certain autoimmune conditions.

A positive result indicates that the person has been exposed to Parvovirus B19 in the past and has developed IgG antibodies. This means that the individual is likely immune to future infections. However, a positive result does not indicate a current infection, as that would require IgM antibody testing or PCR for viral DNA.

The test requires a blood sample, typically drawn from a vein in the arm. The sample is then analyzed in a laboratory using enzyme immunoassay (EIA) or other serological methods to detect the presence of IgG antibodies specific to Parvovirus B19.
