The Phenobarbital Serum test measures the level of phenobarbital, an anticonvulsant medication, in the blood. Phenobarbital is used to manage seizures, anxiety, and withdrawal symptoms, and monitoring its levels ensures effective treatment while avoiding toxicity.

This test is recommended for:

• Patients on phenobarbital therapy to monitor drug levels.
• Individuals experiencing breakthrough seizures despite being on medication.
• Patients showing signs of phenobarbital toxicity, such as drowsiness, confusion, or respiratory depression.

A blood sample is drawn from a vein and analyzed to measure the concentration of phenobarbital.

• Therapeutic range (10–40 mcg/mL): Optimal drug levels for seizure control.
• Low levels: May indicate inadequate dosage, increasing the risk of seizures.
• High levels: Suggests possible toxicity, requiring dosage adjustment.
