FLUCONAZOLE,SERUM Test in Mangaluru Overview

What is Fluconazole test?

Fluconazole is an antifungal medication commonly used to treat fungal infections such as candidiasis and cryptococcal meningitis. Monitoring serum levels helps ensure the drug concentration stays within a therapeutic range—enough to effectively treat infection without causing toxicity.

Fluconazole test measures the concentration of fluconazole in a patient’s blood serum.

Why consider Fluconazole test?

Fluconazole test can be considered for

  • Therapeutic drug monitoring: Fluconazole levels can vary due to individual differences in absorption, metabolism, or elimination.
  • Ensure effective treatment: Ensures drug levels are adequate to fight fungal infections.
  • Prevent toxicity: Helps avoid side effects related to excessive fluconazole levels, such as liver toxicity.
  • Adjust dose: Important for patients with kidney or liver impairment or those on interacting medications.
  • Assess adherence: Confirms if the patient is taking fluconazole as prescribed.

Who should get this tested for Fluconazole test?

Fluconazole test can be recommended for

  • Patients receiving fluconazole for systemic or severe fungal infections.
  • Patients with renal or hepatic impairment affecting drug metabolism.
  • Patients on multiple medications that may interact with fluconazole.
  • Individuals showing unexpected side effects or poor treatment response.
  • Patients requiring long-term fluconazole therapy.

1. Require Serum, Serum extraction should not be performed by use of collection tubes with gel separators, no additives should be added. 2. Label with date and time of collection. 3. Label with date and time of administration of last dose of drug, preferably with drug name and dose. 4. Doctors contact details + clinical and therapeutic history is mandatory. 5. The sample collection has to be performed immediately prior to the next dose (trough)6. It should be noted that trough concentrations may show high inter-individual variation as this depends on several factors these include amongst others the time point of the drug intake, the dosing scheme, the formulation (immediate release, extended release), the time point of blood collection and the metabolic phenotype of the patient. Storage at -18ºC (90 Days),multiple freeze thaw should be avoided.
