The HE4 test is primarily used to help detect and monitor epithelial ovarian cancer, often in conjunction with the CA-125 test.
A blood sample is collected and tested for HE4 protein levels. High levels may suggest malignancy, particularly ovarian cancer.
HE4 is not recommended for general screening but is useful in evaluating women at high risk or monitoring after treatment.
Elevated levels may be seen in ovarian cancer and sometimes in benign gynecological conditions or renal failure.
Low HE4 levels are generally reassuring and may indicate absence of disease or a good response to treatment.
