Abpa Package in New Delhi Overview

What is ABPA Test?

ABPA (Allergic Bronchopulmonary Aspergillosis) is an immune-mediated lung condition caused by a hypersensitivity (allergic reaction) to the fungus Aspergillus fumigatus. The ABPA test, often called the “ABPA panel,” is a group of blood tests that assess specific immune responses—including elevated total IgE, Aspergillus-specific IgE and IgG, along with clinical and radiologic findings to support the diagnosis.

Why consider ABPA Test?

  1. Diagnosis of ABPA: Helps differentiate ABPA from other respiratory conditions by detecting specific antibodies to Aspergillus.
  2. Monitoring Treatment Response: The test can be used to monitor how well treatment is working in individuals diagnosed with ABPA.  By tracking antibody levels, doctors can assess the effectiveness of medications and adjust the treatment plan as needed.
  3. Identifying Worsening Symptoms such as increased wheezing, shortness of breath, or persistent cough, may indicate an ABPA flare-up. If these symptoms are accompanied by fever, chest pain, or coughing up blood, an ABPA test should be considered.
  4. Preventing Lung Damage: Untreated ABPA can lead to lung damage and bronchiectasis, a condition where the airways widen and become damaged.

Who should get tested for ABPA test?

  • To diagnose ABPA in people with asthma or cystic fibrosis who have persistent or worsening respiratory symptoms, especially when there is suspicion of a severe allergic response to Aspergillus.
  • Helps distinguish ABPA from other causes of poorly controlled asthma, unexplained lung infiltrates, or frequent respiratory infections.
  • Early diagnosis is essential to prevent ongoing airway inflammation, mucus plugging, and permanent lung damage like bronchiectasis.
