CRYPTOCOCCUS ANTIGEN, SERUM Test in Mangaluru Overview
No special preparations needed
- Cryptococcal Antigen
The Cryptococcus Antigen Serum Test detects the presence of Cryptococcus antigens in the blood, which helps diagnose cryptococcal infections, particularly cryptococcal meningitis caused by Cryptococcus neoformans or Cryptococcus gattii.
This test is recommended for:
- Immunocompromised individuals, such as HIV/AIDS patients, with symptoms of meningitis.
- Organ transplant recipients and individuals receiving immunosuppressive therapy.
- Patients with persistent headaches, fever, and altered mental status.
A blood sample is collected, and an immunoassay, such as a latex agglutination or enzyme immunoassay (EIA), is used to detect cryptococcal antigens.
- Positive Result: Indicates the presence of Cryptococcus antigens, suggesting an active infection.
- Negative Result: Suggests no detectable Cryptococcus infection, though additional testing may be necessary if clinical suspicion is high.
Early detection of cryptococcal infections allows for timely treatment, preventing severe complications, such as meningitis and death, especially in immunocompromised patients.
