The herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 1 IgG test is a blood test that detects antibodies produced by the immune system in response to the HSV-1 virus.The test determines if you have been exposed to HSV-1 in the past. The test looks for immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies, which are the most common type of antibody produced by the body. IgG antibodies last indefinitely and are produced during every outbreak.

This test detects IgG antibodies against the Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 (HSV-2), which is commonly responsible for genital herpes.
It helps in diagnosing past exposure or infection with HSV-2. It is also used in prenatal screening and for patients with recurrent genital ulcers.
A blood sample is collected and tested for the presence of HSV-2 specific IgG antibodies using ELISA or similar assays.
A positive result indicates previous or current infection with HSV-2. A negative result usually rules out past infection, although very recent exposures may not be detected.
No special preparation is required for this test.
